Hobart Brewing Co. is inspired by Hobart’s rich brewing heritage of the 19th century while celebrating Tasmania’s natural advantages and ideal brewing conditions. Our vision and passion is simple: to produce quality flavoursome beers that reflect our unique Tasmanian identity and celebrate our local ingredients.
Our brewers love the fact that Tasmanian ingredients are fueling innovation in markets much further afield. Overseas breweries are seeking out our hops to brew their own versions of Tassie ales and we just wanted to get in first. Having experienced first hand America’s beer resurgence, our Head Brewer was firmly of the belief that Hobart was ripe for its own.
We share a passion and determination to celebrate great Tasmanian beer and invite you to visit us at our central Hobart taproom and brewery where we brew our favourite beers with Tasmania’s best ingredients while providing a gentle nod to Hobart’s past as a colonial brewing giant.
Delicious independent Tasmanian beer. Currently brewing Harbour Master Tasmanian Ale, Saint Christopher Cream Ale, Iron Pot Rye Porter, Xtra Pale Ale (Tassie strength!), & IPA as well as a variety of rotating seasonals.
Harbour Master is a uniquely Tasmanian Ale that blends three distinct hop varieties grown right here in the Derwent Valley. This copper ale is tightly balanced and highly sessionable.
Brewer’s notes: “With this beer we wanted to showcase some of Tassie’s finest hops. While there are now many great examples of American pales, as well as English, German and Belgian-style beers, there hasn’t been a distinct Tasmanian style. We created Harbour Master as a beer that we imagined to be a distinctive Tasmanian Ale.

At any time of the year you can drop in and expect that there will be at least one IPA on tap and a few more during the annual Hoptoberfest festival to celebrate hoppy beers. Some of the hoppy beers brewed to date include Colorado IPA, Double Harbour Master Red IPA, a collaboration Grapefruit IPA (with the Winston), Hop Eye IPA, Fresh Hop collaboration IPA (with Modus Operandi), Tascadian Dark Ale, and Houblonee (Hoppy) Saison.
A robust Porter inspired by a unique southern Tasmanian landmark. The Iron Pot lighthouse has guided ships out of the treacherous Storm Bay into Hobart's calmer waters since the early 1800s. The Whalers would often leave a fire burning on the "Iron Pot" to guide those ships yet to come in. Porter was the dominant beer of the 1800s throughout England and Tasmania and provided the early convicts working on the first lighthouse and the keepers that followed some comfort having faced the rigors of the great southern swell.
Rye Porter verges from a traditional Porter with the addition of generous malted rye. Pours midnight dark with a spicy biscuit character underpinned with a bittersweet chocolate finish.
